For small sized production companies like ours it's nice to be able to have the same kind of networking capabilities that the big companies have at a fraction of the cost. For about a year, we've been keeping our eye on this new router from Netgear, but have been unable to find it in any stores.
So we ordered it online which seems to be the easiest and often least expensive way these days to get these kind of products. It's a sad state of affairs seeing traditional store-fronts disappearing, but change is never easy and the key is to adapt in this rapidly changing electronic landscape.
For us, being able to effectively network, even in a smaller space with only a few separate rooms, has been a breath of fresh air. Now, with this new router we're able to plug high speed USB into it, print from anywhere, as well as access files on iPhone, smartphone and tablet from anywhere! We're able to run 6 computers (and as many as we like) from anywhere in the office wirelessly and access our main hard drive. We're even able to wirelessly connect to our main hard drive from ANYWHERE. So all I need to do is open our Pitch Bible from my little netbook and run our various samples, storyboard, treatment, outline etc. sitting in the office of that big studio exec.
We can hook up our Macbook Pro via a HDMI cable to our TV (or Bluetooth now available on many new tv's) and stream in HD without a degraded picture or glitching, anything from our main hard drive. With this router, we can stream our latest trailer directly to our iPhone that can be wirelessly transmitted to the giant monitor in the studio exec's office. Check it out. It may make things run a little smoother.
I've put the link below. Enjoy!
